Little Victories

When you have a struggling reader, every day is a challenge and sometimes, because you want your child to succeed, you feel helpless in knowing that their process of learning is simply not as fast as you want them to be.  When you let them take their time and let it take it's course, however, the rewards are sweet.

I was doing an extended read aloud of Doctor Doolittle today and in mid read Myka asked to read as well.  She completed almost 2 pages with little assistance and I was brimming with pride and was ready to do the happy dance.  Her reading competency at the beginning of summer where more than a grade below.  Now she's back on track, still a grade below but no longer in the red and today's surprise confirms that progress.  She is well on her way to reading as she should but only in her own time.

It pays to pay attention as to how your children learn and accept them for who they are and not what they'll become.  I'm glad we are in the position to do that and help them instead of pressure them to conform even when they are not ready to do so.  I believe in the end, they will learn not because they have to but because they love to.
