The Back up Plan

What do you do when your weekend don't turn out the way you planned?  Well, for starters it was a very important schedule that got screwed and unfortunately, we have family to thank for that.  After a few miscommunications (or rather lack thereof), we ended getting bailed from our carpool to our Special Day Assembly in Fairfield.  With both our cars in no condition to withstand the long drive, we considered the safety of the children and aired towards the safer option of calling it a day and going to an assembly closer to home on a later date. It was disappointing to say the least especially to my husband who was certain that my nephew will not forgo attending this important event in favor of a family camping trip that was also going on this past weekend.  Unfortunately, his inexperience got the better of him, he of course picked the momentary pleasure rather than spiritual treasures dragging us along the way albeit not on purpose. But there's no point to wasting our weekend wallowing in some misunderstanding.  We quickly pick ourselves up and dragged our tired girls (whose bodies are to the point of exhaustion in fighting the latest round of viruses from Mer's school) and treated ourselves to something new.

Homeroom 510 was in my list of eats to try and since my girls are mac n' cheese addicts, this should have been a welcome treat.  The smallish restaurant is in Oakland about a half hour drive from us and since we went in a less busy time of the day, we did not fight off anyone for a parking space (though I would imagine how difficult it could get during peak time) and got in right away waiting only a few minutes so that our table can be clean and ready.

I ordered the classic macs for the girls while Mo opted for the favored Gilroy (lots of garlic) and I stayed true to my veggie option and picked the summer pesto (warm not cold). Mo enjoyed his beer discovery while I tried the organic limeaid which was tasty but not really out of the ordinary.

The verdict on the food....Ickey was excited at first until she tasted her classic.  It was not Sweet Tomatoes mac n' cheese and for that reason it was probably too much for her taste.  Mer on the other hand enjoyed hers and insisted it was better than Sweet Tomatoes but she did not clean her plate like she does when we are at ST's.  Mine was as expected of a pesto, though I probably would have enjoyed it more if it was less oily. And Mo...well, his was the favorite and Ickey infact, traded hers for some of his and finished her portion.

The highlight of it all is when we tried the recommended homemade oreo and peanut butter pie....yum!!!

Overall, it's not the food but the time out together as a family (a rarity these days) was what we really enjoyed.  It would have been a nice day to see the city and get some ocean air but the girls were just too tired for that and our truck will likely not make it there either.  We were hoping to go to an impromptu getaway this weekend since we all desperately need it.  But cost is always an object and a bit more planning might save us a buck or two so I think I'll shop around some more and perhaps some time next month we can make that happen.

Well, it was definitely not the weekend we hoped for but we made the best out of it and still came out smiling!
