The Book Box

Reading is an important part of our family routine.  Unfortunately, in the haste of the day, we really don't get to read as much as we want to.  Now that Mer is in school, reading is a daily requirement and because it is, I'm grateful that it has once again become a regular part of our routine.  To celebrate or perhaps also encourage the love for reading, all kindergartner's are required to have a box to keep the books they make and read throughout the school year. This way, it's easier for them to find and re-read their books over and over again.

For Mer and I, it's another opportunity to express ourselves and our love for art.  Mer of course, has her own favorite things and things to do and the box was to be an expression of who they are and what they like.  If you ask my daughter that question, the answer is always the same - flowers!!!

So we made a box with flowers but not just any flowers.  Mer's other love is sewing (takes after Mommy, of course).  So I had her sew a "J" for her first name and made some of the flowers from cut out fabric (with Ickey's help).

Then I had her pick letters from the magazine to spell out her first name.  After which she embellished her box with her other most favorite things, ribbons and buttons (from her own button collection).

It turned out really nice and very Mer.  She proudly presented it to her teacher in school today and announced proudly afterwards that she absolutely loved it.

I absolutely loved it too!!!
